The Beginners Guide to Meditation

Meditation can feel intimidating if you don’t know where to start, and it can be hard not to set intentions that may feel unattainable. You may think that meditating is about clearing your mind and sitting without any thoughts, but in reality it is about connecting completely with the present moment. The more you practice, the easier it becomes to not give in to the distractions, and to truly focus on the world around you.

Here are some tips and tricks, if you are new to meditation!

  1. Find a quiet and comfortable place to sit.

  2. Decide how much time you would like to devote to sitting in the beginning. It does not have to be long to start, and you can work your way up.

  3. Check in with your posture, try to sit up straight if it is comfortable.

  4. Remind yourself that you are allowed to take this time to sit in silence, focus on your breathing, and stay present.

  5. Note any tensions in your body, and any worries that may cross your mind. Acknowledge them with kindness, and then release them.

  6. Tune into your breath. Feel the breath in your belly. Don’t worry too much about modifying your breath, just be aware of it as it flows through your body.

  7. When you notice that your mind has wandered, gently return to your breath.

  8. When you are ready to end your meditation session, relax, stretch, express gratitude, and return to your daily life!

Many beginners like to start with guided meditation, which you can find all over youtube, as well as through apps such as mindworks, and calm!
